Portrait 52: Soutine

Digital collage printed on 100x70cm 3mm dibond, mounting set included.

Portrait 52: Soutine is part of the ongoing series ‘Artist Portraits’ by Visual Artist Roberto Voorbij. It’s a limited edition full color print on dibond featuring French- Jewish artist Chaïm Soutine. The series of collages was originally commissioned by ARTISTS NOT ARMIES. All portraits of the series follow the same concept; an artist portrait in which the face of the artist is replaced by one of their most significant artworks. The painting - just recognizable as a landscape with houses - used in Soutine’s face is highly expressive in its distortion of shape and use of color. The inner emotion seems to become visible to the viewer. More generally, you could say that this portrait deals with representation and identity, the artist as a work of art, art as representation of the maker, the group identity. But of course, a work of art can be read in multiple ways.

About the artist

Roberto Voorbij (@robertovoorbij), part of the Amsterdam based art collective POPinnArt, is a multidisciplinary artist. Apart from working with ‘ready made’ materials, he works with video, 3D Software and (digital) collage. Commerciality and public space are recurring themes in Roberto’s work. What highly fascinates him about this is the underlying history, politics and marketing strategy of our seemingly neutral environment. His works are often socially critical. Another recurring theme concerns the art world / art market and the way in which the artist manifests itself here, as well as the autonomy of the artwork that is being questioned.

About the Nocroni Art Project

The Nocroni Global Art Project connects upcoming artists with people across the globe in times of pandemic where artists search for new ways to find new audiences. The project presents six affordable artworks, each exclusively printed on aluminium in a limited edition of 50. Nocroni founders Bob en Teun curated six total different artists, each with their own style and story, with whom they share their ongoing quest for discovering the layers behind the obvious surface of one’s day-to-day environment.
